Head of Science KS2 - KS4 - September 2027

or Teacher of Science with a pathway to Head of Science

Full time position

Salary: £34,069 - £52,390 per annum (M1-T2 on the Hallfield School Teacher Pay Scale,  dependent on qualifications, skills and experience

If appointed with the Head of Science responsibility there would be an annual allowance of £4,115)

The Role

Hallfield School is extending its age range to 16. Our first Year 9 cohort began in September 2026 and our first Year 10 cohort will start in September 2027, taking the School through to GCSE for the first time. This is a rare opportunity to shape the Science curriculum and department of a growing school at a defining point in its history.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed and knowledgeable Science teacher, with a specialism in Chemistry and/or Physics, to lead the development and teaching of Science up to Year 11, delivering outstanding, practical Physics and Chemistry lessons that enthuse and challenge bright pupils to achieve their full potential.

We will consider candidates at two different stages of their career. Please state clearly in your application statement which route you wish to be considered for, or whether you would like to be considered for both.

Route 1: Head of Science

For an experienced teacher ready to lead the department from September 2027. You will have secondary teaching experience in both Physics and Chemistry up to and including GCSE, a record of strong outcomes, and ideally previous curriculum or departmental responsibility. You will be able to demonstrate strengths in planning, delivering and developing a high-quality curriculum, predominantly for Years 7–11.

Route 2: Teacher of Science with a pathway to Head of Science

For an enthusiastic, qualified Science teacher at the beginning of their career, (including Early Career Teachers (ECTs) coming to the end of their induction period), who has strong subject knowledge and the ambition to become a Head of Science. You would be appointed as a Teacher of Science on the main pay scale and supported through an individual development plan, which would include:

• mentoring and regular guidance from the Deputy Head: Head of Seniors;

• leadership and subject-specific professional development;

• a planned, progressive increase in departmental responsibility as the department and the School grow.

Progression to Head of Science, and the associated allowance, would follow once you are ready and have been formally appointed to the role. Readiness will be reviewed through the School’s appraisal process; the timescale is not fixed and progression is not automatic.

The Person

This is a wonderful opportunity for an inspiring subject leader to become a member of our teaching staff, and whichever route you apply for, you will need to demonstrate that you:

• hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent, and a degree in a Science subject;

• are able to teach Physics and Chemistry to GCSE, with a willingness to support the teaching of Biology;

• are passionate about practical, hands-on Science and about developing pupils’ curiosity and critical thinking;

• are willing to teach some Science in the Prep School from Year 3;

• work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues and parents, and show resilience and good humour;

• will contribute fully to the wider life of the School, including running an after-school co-curricular club.
